In an open house held on January 12, 2011, Building Careers from the Ground Up Construction Program of the HWDSB and Habitat for Humanity exhibited the house that the OYAP Construction students took part in building in the last semester.

The board has partnered with Habitat for Humanity for the last two years, an organization that builds houses for low income families by mobilizing volunteers in the community.

Building Careers from the Ground Up: Construction Program is a six credit semester program that allows the students to experience the home building industry. This Construction Technology class is delivered through in class and cooperative education, by partnering with community businesses.

According to Rich Neufeld, Experiential Learning Consultant of HWDSB, since the program started nine years ago, students have built one house a year.

This last semester, the students were responsible in building the roof of a town house, which will change the dream of some families to become home owners into a reality. Bob McConkey , the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity said ‘…the students have done an extraordinary job and the work speaks for itself. The future looks bright with the skills the students will bring to the work’.

In this semester, eleven students from different secondary schools participated in this program at the Habitat for Humanity house building project. Neufeld announced that nine of these students have already been accepted as registered apprentices at Mohawk College and the prospect for the rest of them to be registered looks bright.
