The Hamilton Wentworth District School Board and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program held its first Women in Trades dinner on Tuesday, June 2nd 2015 at the HWDSB Education Centre. Young women in Grades 9 to 12 heard from female tradespersons about what it is like to work in the skills trades and every attending student was asked to bring with them a significant female mentor in their lives to enjoy the evening’s activities along with them.
The panel included Jamie McMillan, Ironworker; Marla Robinson, Industrial Fluid Power instructor; Karen Breitner, Electrician; Sally Harvey, Horticulturalist and Kate van der Zalm, Automotive Technical Service Advisor.
The panel discussion offered the students and their mentors a great opportunity to ask questions and hear from the panelists about their own personal journeys working in a normally male-dominated skilled trade.
The evening wrapped up with a dinner and a chance to speak with 18 different trades related exhibitors.
IEC was happy to help plan and facilitate this very successful event.
