Three Hamilton Catholic elementary schools are among 90 schools named the best in Ontario by the Garfield Weston Awards for Excellence in Education.

The awards, based on The Fraser Institute's Report Card on Ontario's Elementary Schools and an analysis of the Ministry of Education's student standardized tests, were given out in Toronto Tuesday.

Awards were given in three categories -- improvement in academics, determination in academic achievement and overall academic achievement.

The three Hamilton elementary schools honoured were:
* Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, named runner up in Improvement in Academics and awarded a $1,000 prize.
* St. Lawrence, named a school of distinction in the determination category.
* Our Lady of Lourdes, named a school of distinction in the determination category.
More than 600 educators from 74 different schools attended.
