On April 20th, OWOTC and the City of Hamilton collaborated to provide information about career options in water and wastewater for educators from both Boards of Education. OWOTC, a subsidiary of World Water and Wastewater Solutions LTD, provides hands-on and class room water and wastewater operator trainings.

OWOTC announced that they will give a scholarship for two students (one from each board). The criteria and requirements for the scholarship and how the students will be chosen will be further discussed.

Doug Cooper, President of Ontario Water Operators Training Center (OWOTC), told the educators that in the next five years, 50 % of the jobs in the industry will be empty. This makes it very important to train and inform students on the career options in this area.

He also emphasized that it is critical that we receive clean, potable water and that wastewater be discharged in an environmentally safe manner. Water and wastewater operators and Water Quality Analysts are the people responsible for these tasks. Doug Cooper added that by providing an opportunity for two students to be trained to become water and wastewater operators, OWOTC is looking into contributing to the community and at the same time increasing awareness about the importance of careers in water and wastewater.
